New Music Fridays Starts Tomorrow, Whether You Like it Or Not…

New music will officially come out on Fridays in 45 countries, starting tomorrow July 9th. The switch is the result of a decision made by the IFPI.

While most independents agreed that we need a global release day in this digital world, many didn’t think Friday was the best choice. The IFPI was accused of coming to a decision with the major labels and RIAA, ignoring the opinions of independents.

Let’s revisit some of the statements that were made.<!–/*

“Whilst I acknowledge the needs of a digital world for coordination, it seems to me to be crazy to throw away one of the trading week’s two peaks, and the ability to re-stock and rectify errors before the week’s second peak.

A2IM:

“A2IM supports the concept of a Global Street Date but for a variety of business reasons as spelled out in our previous comments there are a number of business hurdles that make Fridays less than an optimal date for the United States marketplace and Independents in particular.

Lohan Presencer, CEO of Ministry Of Sound:

“As far as we can tell this is an initiative driven by the US majors, it doesn’t even necessarily have the support of some of their UK counterparts. Yet again major biased initiatives are driven through our business without proper consideration of their impact, we are not surprised.

Martin Goldschmidt, founder of Cooking Vinyl: “That was only a ‘consultation’ if the new dictionary definition of ‘to consult’ is ‘to tell to f*ck off’.”

iTunes Song Downloads Are Below 2008 Levels…

paiddownloads2015

2015 is a flat-line projection, based on first-half numbers (531.6 million downloads, down 10.1% from first-half 2014). And remember, this is all before Apple Music launched.

How Much of a Difference Does a ‘Festival Survival Pack’ Make at EDC?

IMG_9546

Last month I went to EDC for the first time. The week beforehand I was at Governors Ball, two weeks beforehand I was at FORM Festival, and I came down with strep throat three times in two months. It had completely drained me.

Frankly, I was dreading EDC. I was expecting a shitshow worse than Governors Ball and I was expecting to get sick again from exhaustion.

Surprisingly I had a ton of fun at EDC! It was awesome!

I said huge music festivals are “OVER” in my Governors Ball review, but EDC proved me wrong.<!–/*

// ]]>A huge part of ensuring that you don’t have a shitty time at festivals involves being prepared. You have to hydrate, get enough rest beforehand, pack snacks, take earplugs, etc.

At EDMbiz (the conference before EDC) a company called Vitality Gear gave me a Festival Survivor Pack, that they said contains all festival essentials. The pack contained the following items:

I had already taken sunglasses, earplugs, a portable charger, and sunscreen with me to Vegas. But the sunscreen I took was in a huge bottle, I paid like $19 for my portable charger, and if one of my earplugs happened to fall out I didn’t have a replacement.

Luckily the Festival Survivor Pack came with a mini sunscreen bottle, a AA battery powered charger, and three Earpeace ear plugs (just in case you lose one). It was also good to have wet wipes and hand sanitizer on hand.

Earpeace ear plugs will set you back $16 on Amazon. Portable chargers generally cost $15+. Buy those two things separately and you’ve already spent at least $31.

So how much is this Festival Survivor Pack?… $24.99

It’s a smokin’ deal (and no they didn’t pay me to say that). The only things missing from the pack were a refillable water bottle and snacks.

+Review: My Crappy Airline EDMbiz Earbuds…

The company does have a pack that comes with snacks, for an extra $5. The price increase seems worth it, considering it comes with lentil chips, hummus, two Kind bars, two packs of sunflower seeds, and four tubes of peanut butter.

However, I’d like to see a pack option that comes with either a collapsable water bottle or a bottle with a built in filter.

// ]]>The new Windows 10 will include a music streaming service called Groove, named after a brand Microsoft bought around 10 years ago.

Groove is basically just a rebranded Xbox Music, and Xbox Music Pass subscriptions will automatically become Groove Music Passes.

The rebrand will come to PCs first and then will roll out to other devices. User will be able to upload their music libraries via OneDrive for listening on other devices, such as Windows Phone, Xbox, and even iPhones and Androids in the near future. This is similar to Apple’s iCloud Music Library.

A Groove subscription will cost $9.99 a month or $99 a year. Microsoft says Groove has over 40 million tracks.
